Project Cloud.

This is my current personal project, I’ve been working on it for most of this year; I’ve been doing sketches for it and posting them as “Drawing a Day” for a while. Anything involved with this project will be tagged with “Project Cloud” and can be viewed by clicking the button in the about box.

This project is the first in a series and will link with future projects that I plan to develop. I find it easier to work with ideas like this by “branding” them into mini projects, I have an overall plan that I feel is quite ambitious and to say that im starting work on everything right now would be silly, I’d never get anything out of my head and onto paper. Its like I’ve got a large idea in my head, and its perfect and unspoiled until I either execute it poorly and ruin it or execute it perfectly and feel happy and I don’t want to execute it poorly, so to break it up into smaller projects; for me is a good way to work.

What is Project Cloud about?

Its about characters and a story, that much I know. What it ends up finally being is still not certain, it could be illustrations, comics, animations, a game? It could be some of those, all of those or something else completely. It started off as an Illustration I did in my sketchbook last year which I coloured this year, from that I decided I wanted to use this character for something more. After a while I decided this character was the protagonist of a 2D platform game, this lead me to make more characters and enemies, I wanted to keep it simple but everything I made up had to have a reason for being and I made up a story and basic plot.

As my idea became more developed the idea of making a game changed into making an animation, and shortly after that making a comic. So at this point I’m focusing on making a comic which I want to post on my blog and website and in the future I’ll see if I can get it printed. I also really want to make an animation, I’ve even got it story-boarded, obviously I’d like to take animation as far as I can, I’d like to make it a decent length but for now I’m focusing on an intro or “teaser” to go with the comic.

I will post all the development work on this project and tag it appropriately so I can keep track of how it develops. Ill also post updates on my brand new twitter account @MarkMooreDraw.

#36 …and they live in the water.
Drawing a day.
This is awfully rough. This is a bit of early concept art for a personal project I’m working on right now. I’d love to spend more time making this into something better, and I will, the purpose of my drawing a day is to document my drawing process.

Sketchbook page of a character I’m working on. As I said in my previous post, I’m looking into making a game, or maybe even a comic to start with, I want to develop a more simplistic style, something that more naturally occurs when I draw rather than my attempt at “realism”, something that better lends itself to animation and game art. “its a bit late to be changing your entire drawing ethos mark” -some would say, well this is in addition to everything I’ve learned over the years about proportion and realism. I want to develop my own “drawing”* ability rather than the ability to draw what already exists.
* I may write a blog post about what I consider the different types of drawing to be in the future, probably on one of my more procrastinatory philosophical days.

I did this animation this morning, I am looking into developing my own characters for a game and wanted to make a quick run cycle. Its not without its flaws but Its only a quick test. I love using a tablet but I cant help but feel I lose a lot of control when not using a pencil. Next time I’ll try hand drawn animation (with a pencil), time to dust off the light box.
